I was also moved by the image of reading as offering yourself to be wounded by a piece of writing. Like all tranformative experience, reading at its best does some kind of damage to the envelope in which you move about. It’s a breach, but one that you suffer voluntarily. You open yourself to it, expecting and even hoping to be altered by it, without knowing how.
